Christmas Shopping Then and Now

When I was a little girl I had a Christmas Savings Account that each week I would go to the bank and give them 10 cents and they would stamp my book and tear out the page. Then about December 15th I would get a check in the mail for $5, that was my shopping money. I lived in the country but we went to town every Friday and that is when I shopped. In those days I would go to stores all by myself, it was quite safe in Mount Joy, and off I would go to the few stores that were there. I got gifts for my parents, brothers and most of all my dolls (they were very real to me). The $5 covered that, looking back it seems unreal, but there was a five and dime in town and it really was a place to buy things for a nickle and dime, so the money stretched.

Now I shop online and only go to the mall if I must. The shoppes in Mount Joy have changed completely but we do have some that offer nice gifts that aren’t costly. A few years ago I bought most of my gifts in town at those neat shoppes. This year I made something for everyone so the shopping is minimal. I can’t tell what it is just in case my kids or grands actually read this :) .

More Christmas

I’ve writtten so much about Christmas that one would think that is all I think about, not so, but I keep getting more and more info on things that are happening here in Lancaster County and they all seem like fun and interesting ways to celebrate. This coming weekend must be the busiest of all. Just a few miles from me is the Marietta House Tour and the town closes down its year of celebrating 200 years as a town. This tour is always a big affair for the town. It will be Sunday Dec. 2 starting at 11 am.

Let’s see….Friday you can go to Intercourse for their Holiday Celebration starting at 4:30. Saturday you can do the Landis Valley Museum with all the Pennsylvania German Christmas stuff then move on to the PA Railroad Museum. Enough museums, while you are all down that way how about a great dinner at Iron Horse Inn. Dee’s food is always wonderful. I have more in my head just come by.

Thanksgiving Dinner

Over the river and through the woods to Grandmother’s house we go….. I guess most people don’t do this anymore, our family does, except for the woods/river thing, but there is hope…..Lancaster County has lots of restaurants that offer Thanksgiving Dinner. I have a list and am willing to share the info with you or you can go PDCVB and they have a list of the restaurants. If you really want to go over the river I can arrange that also.

Christmas in Lancaster County

Can you believe I was watching Christmas movies on the Hallmark Channel this weekend????

Well, as much as I live in denial of where the times goes, we are approaching the season and it comes earlier and earlier every year. Merchants, like QVC were marketing gifts before October, and I admit, that probably for the first time, I did some catalog shopping in August. Christmas is so much more than all this stuff.  Lititz Moravian Church does a beautiful Christmas Service several time before Christmas, it is worth the effort. The Littiz Historical Foundation is also doing a Carol Sing in December.  Many churches in the area have cantatas as well. The reason for the season is to celebrate the birth of the Christ child.

Fridays in Lancaster County

WORK IS DONE NOW FOR FUN…………………it’s Friday and what am I going to do???? Our small towns have a great plan for having fun, they are special Fridays. First Friday is Downtown Lancaster , second Friday is Downtown Lititz, fourth Friday is Mount Joy and Columbia. People stroll the sidewalks and enjoy specials offered by the little shops, most restaurants offer a deal if you show a receipt from a local shop. Someone thinks up great themes and it might include tastings (like chili or chocolate) or watching someone do ice sculptures. All in all you get the small town experience and have fun.

Ghost Tours in Lancaster County

It’s October and for some reason it is associated with “ghost tours”. Lancaster County will not be out done :) We have a walking tour in Strasburg. Aside from ghosts it is a beautiful little town. While there you can do a train ride and do more ghosts.  Enough, if you really like this stuff you can go to Jason’s Woods and spend the evening. I’m much more interested in food , BUT you can do a ghost tour at Bube’s Brewery as well.

Fall in Lancaster County

Fall seems to be a favorite season for everyone, and why not, the weather is wonderful, the trees are all dressed in their finery and Lancaster County is a great destination. Have you ever done a corn maze? Cherry Crest is offering a flashlight maze, a bit of adventure, lots of laughs all with a moon lite night. Before you head to the maze you can have dinner at Iron Horse Inn in Strasburg, let me tell you it is delicious, yup everything on the menu. Tell Dee I sent you. You need to eat before the maze so that you will have room for breakfast at Vogt Farm the next morning :)

Speaking of Christmas

Okay, maybe you weren’t really speaking of Christmas but stuff is crossing my desk about Christmas, so I thought maybe now is the time for you to give  it some thought.

Here at Vogt Farm we are not going to be issuing Gift certificates any longer but we recommend that you purchase them from the Authentic Bed and Breakfasts of Lancaster County. I would love to have your friends and family so they can use that Gift Certificate to stay here. If you want I will send you a rack card to put with the gift certificate, just email or call.

That covers the gift idea for Christmas but there is much more…..the dinner theatres, American Music theatre, the house tours (I don’t have the full list yet), shopping, and don’t forget Pa Ren Faire. So you see we have lots of ways to celebrate and have fun. Some of this starts even before Thanksgiving.

Civil War in PA 150 year

2013 will be the 150th year since the battle of Gettysburg. Before the troops got to Gettysburg they tried to cross the Susquehanna River at Wrightsville. The goal was to reach Philadelphia, Harrisburg and other key locations. The residents of Columbia (just a little river town) stopped the advancement by burning the bridge that connected Wrightsville with Columbia. Columbia will be celebrating this event on the actual date of the burning. June 28, 2013. Civil War buffs can come and experience this event before going on to Gettysburg for the celebration there. Plan now.

Farm Fair Season

It’s that time of year, I can already feel it as I sit outside in the evening; the humidity is lower, the evenings are cooler and the crickets are chirping, it must be time for the fairs to begin. All of this is right on schedule because next week the 20th – 25th it is the first farm fair, Elizabethttown, a lovely town just 6 miles from us. You can get up close and personal with farm animals, taste food till you think you will burst,  view arts and crafts done by locals, and observe people ( I find this very interesting).

In Lancaster County we are unique in that instead of a County Fair we have 8 local fairs with the first being Aug. 20-25 (mentioned above) and the last one October 8-12. Pick a time and come we have a fair almost every week somewhere. If this is the reason for coming be sure to ask.
